The Pre-Install Checklist: How to Prepare Your Scalp Before Any Protective Style

ToxiTress pre-install scalp preparation checklist

The install is just the beginning. What you do before your stylist touches your hair sets the foundation for how comfortable, healthy, and long-lasting your protective style will be. Here’s the complete pre-install scalp preparation checklist.

Why Pre-Install Prep Matters

Going into an install with a dirty, dry, or irritated scalp means those issues will only get worse under your style. Buildup gets sealed in. Dryness intensifies. Irritation becomes harder to address. Starting with a clean, balanced, protected scalp gives your hair and scalp the best possible foundation.

The Pre-Install Checklist

1. Deep Cleanse Your Scalp

Use a clarifying or detox cleanser to remove all product buildup, excess sebum, and impurities. Focus the product on your scalp, not just your hair. Massage gently for 2–3 minutes and rinse thoroughly. This is not the time for a co-wash.

2. Rebalance Your Scalp’s pH

After cleansing, use a lightweight scalp product only if it fits your needs and label directions. Keep the layer light.

3. Treat Any Active Concerns

If you have dryness, flaking, or irritation, address it now — before it gets sealed under your style. Do not cover open or worsening irritation. Speak with a licensed professional when needed.

4. Protect Before the Install

Apply a lightweight scalp protector to the scalp and hairline before your stylist begins. Use only a product labeled for that purpose, and stop if it causes discomfort.

5. Allow Your Scalp to Fully Dry

This is critical, especially for braids and locs. Installing over damp hair can keep the base wet and create unwanted odor. Allow your scalp to air dry completely, or use a hooded dryer on a low setting.

6. Communicate with Your Stylist

Let your stylist know if you have any scalp sensitivities, thinning areas, or concerns. Ask them to avoid braiding too tightly, especially at the hairline and temples.

Timing Your Prep

Finish early enough for the hair and scalp to dry fully. The needed time depends on hair density, style, and drying method.
