Taking down braids can leave lint, oil, gel, and loose hair near the roots. Do not rush to comb through it. A slow cleanup can make wash day easier.
Start with dry sections
Divide the hair into small sections. Hold each section near the root so you do not pull hard on the scalp.
Loosen the easy pieces first
Use your fingers to lift loose lint and shed hair. Do not scratch the scalp with your nails. If a piece will not move, leave it for the next step.
Use a buildup-removal step
Apply your cleanup product exactly as its label directs. Work in small areas. Give the product time to spread through the residue instead of adding more force.
Detangle from the ends upward
Start at the ends with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Move toward the roots a little at a time. Hold the section above each knot to reduce pulling.
Wash and rinse well
Focus on the scalp and roots, where old product collects. Use your finger pads and rinse until no cleanser remains. Adding oil before the scalp is clean can create another layer over the residue.
Pause when the scalp needs attention
Stop if the scalp is bleeding, very painful, or has open skin. Wait until it feels calm before another tight style. Speak with a licensed professional about symptoms that last or get worse.
Next, read what to do between protective styles. If the roots still feel coated, see why buildup may remain after washing.
Start with EXTRACT™
EXTRACT™ Foundation Reset™ helps wash away buildup and extra oil before your next style. Use it first, rinse well, and follow the product label.
