Your braid appointment starts before you sit in the chair. A clean, dry, comfortable base makes it easier to avoid heavy product layers and notice sore areas before styling begins.
Your pre-braid checklist
- Remove old gel, oil, and edge control.
- Rinse until no cleanser remains.
- Detangle gently in small sections.
- Dry the hair and scalp fully.
- Check for pain, bumps, or broken skin.
- Tell your braider where you feel tender.
1. Clear old product first
Focus on the roots, hairline, crown, and nape. Use your finger pads instead of scratching with your nails. Follow the cleanser label and rinse well.
2. Keep the next steps light
Do not stack oil, gel, spray, and edge control before the appointment. If you use scalp products, give each one a clear job and follow its label.
3. Let everything dry
Do not cover a damp base with added hair. Drying time depends on your hair, the products used, and your drying method. Start early enough that you do not need to rush.
4. Plan for comfortable tension
Braids should not cause sharp pain, a headache, or burning. Ask your braider to loosen any section that hurts. Do not braid over open or badly irritated skin.
5. Bring the right information
Tell your braider about tender spots, product reactions, and the areas where gel tends to build up. Ask what products they plan to use so you can avoid duplicate layers.
After takedown, use this guide to remove braid residue gently. If you use oil, read how much scalp oil to use under braids.

Delay the appointment if the scalp is painful, open, or badly irritated. Speak with a licensed professional about symptoms that last or get worse.
